Vintage Blondie Brownie Recipe

Friendly Disclaimer: Most of the recipes in Virgie's Recipe Box have been lovingly transcribed from handwritten recipe cards. While some recipes offer delightful details, others may spark your culinary creativity with their charming brevity. Originating from the 1960s to the 1980s, certain ingredients used back then might not suit today’s preferences or availability. Where applicable, we've suggested modern substitutions. Nonetheless, we encourage you to tailor these recipes to your taste and enjoy the adventure of making them uniquely yours.

Whip up a batch of our cherished Blondie Brownies, a recipe that perfectly blends brown sugar, shortening, and a dash of vanilla into a lusciously smooth batter. Whether you choose to add a crunchy twist with optional nuts or keep them delightfully plain, these blondies promise a golden, buttery treat. This recipe transforms simple ingredients into squares of joy—ideal for sharing or savoring solo as you create sweet memories.

Ingredients:

2 cups brown sugar
½ cup shortening (Crisco Margarine)
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Dry Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/3 tsp salt

Optional:

½ cup nuts (if desired)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. In a mixing bowl, cream or beat together brown sugar, shortening, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well after each addition.

5. If desired, fold in nuts.

6. Spread the resulting dough evenly on oiled parchment paper in a cookie tin.

7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes. Remember to set a timer to ensure proper baking.

8. Once baked, remove from the oven and, while still warm, cut the Blondie Brownies into squares.

Make It Modern: To bring a modern twist to these classic Blondie Brownies, consider substituting the shortening with the same amount of unsalted butter for a richer flavor, or coconut oil for a dairy-free option that adds a slight coconutty aroma. If you're looking to add whole grains, swap half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier taste and added fiber. For those avoiding refined sugar, coconut sugar is a fantastic one-to-one substitute that offers a deeper molasses-like sweetness. Feel free to experiment with adding a mix of walnuts and pecans for a delightful crunch and enhanced flavor profile. These small tweaks can make your Blondie Brownies even more special and tailored to contemporary tastes and health preferences.
